케런 배스 시장 “불법행위 엄단”…군·경 대거 투입, 평화적 시위 촉구
로스앤젤레스(LA) 다운타운에서 5일째 이어진 반-ICE(이민세관단속국) 시위와 그에 따른 방화·약탈 사태가 시 당국의 야간 통행금지 조치로 한풀 꺾였다.
케런 배스 LA 시장은 10일(현지시간) 오후 8시부터 11일 오전 6시까지 다운타운 1제곱마일 구역에 긴급 통행금지를 발령하며 “불법행위자는 즉각 체포해 엄정 처벌하겠다”고 밝혔다.
이번 통행금지는 최근 ICE의 대규모 이민 단속 이후 촉발된 시위가 밤마다 폭력적으로 변질되며, 상점 23곳이 약탈당하고 차량 방화, 경찰과의 충돌이 잇따르자 내려진 조치다.
실제로 통행금지 첫날 밤, 경찰은 시위대 해산 명령에 불응한 150여 명을 체포했고, 대규모 추가 불상사는 발생하지 않았다. 현지 언론은 “이번 주 들어 가장 조용한 밤이었다”고 전했다.
케런 배스 시장은 “이번 조치는 시민의 안전과 재산 보호를 위한 불가피한 결정”이라며 “거주자, 언론, 필수 근로자는 예외지만, 해당 구역 내 모든 비필수 사업장은 오후 8시까지 영업을 종료해야 한다”고 강조했다.
또한, 트럼프 대통령의 명령에 따라 투입된 4,000여 명의 주방위군과 700여 명의 해병대가 경찰과 함께 치안 유지에 나섰다.
시위대와 종교계, 시민단체는 평화적 시위의 중요성을 재차 강조했다. 한 시위 참가자는 “폭력은 메시지를 왜곡할 뿐”이라며 “이민자들과 함께하는 평화로운 연대를 이어가겠다”고 말했다.
한편, LA시와 캘리포니아 주정부는 연방정부의 군 투입 확대에 반발해 법적 대응에 나섰으며, 시 당국은 상황을 지켜보며 통행금지 연장 여부를 결정할 방침이다.
