LA 경찰 “폭력 시위, 평화적 시위와 달라” 강경 대응 천명

로스앤젤레스 경찰국장 짐 맥도넬(Jim McDonnell)이 최근 이민세관단속국(ICE) 관련 시위에서 발생한 폭력 사태의 주범으로 “가면을 쓴 전문 무정부주의자들”을 지목하며, 앞으로 체포자 수가 현재보다 훨씬 늘어날 것이라고 경고했다.
맥도넬 청장은 “이들은 평화적으로 1차 수정헌법(표현의 자유)을 행사하는 시민들과는 전혀 다른 집단”이라며 “후드와 마스크로 얼굴을 가린 채, 각종 폭력과 혼란을 일으키고 있다”고 밝혔다.
시위가 격화되자 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 캘리포니아 주지사 개빈 뉴섬(Gavin Newsom)의 승인 없이 2,000명의 추가 병력과 700명의 미 해병대를 LA에 투입하기로 결정했다.
이는 1960년대 민권운동 이후 처음으로 주방위군의 연방화가 이뤄진 사례다. 이에 대해 뉴섬 주지사와 카렌 배스 LA 시장은 “불필요하고 오히려 사태를 악화시킨다”며 반발했으나, 맥도넬 청장은 “오늘 밤 상황을 보면 이미 통제 불능 상태”라며 군 투입 필요성을 시사했다.
주말 동안 경찰은 최소 50명을 체포했으며, 이 중에는 경찰 라인을 오토바이로 돌파한 남성과 화염병을 던진 용의자도 포함됐다. 일부 시위대는 경찰을 향해 폭죽과 시멘트 조각을 던졌고, 상점 약탈과 차량 방화 등도 발생했다.
맥도넬 국장은 “이들은 한 시위에서 다른 시위로 이동하며, 같은 전술을 반복적으로 사용한다. 서로 연결되어 있다”고 강조했다.
경찰은 바디캠과 각종 영상 자료를 분석해 추가 가담자들을 색출할 방침이다.
맥도넬 국장은 “지금까지의 체포자 수는 앞으로 체포될 인원에 비하면 아무것도 아니다”라며 강경 대응을 예고했다. 또한, 연방 병력의 ‘명확한 협조’ 없이 투입될 경우 현장 혼란과 운영상 큰 어려움이 예상된다고 우려를 표했다.
한편, 현장에서는 평화적 시위 참가자와 폭력적 행동을 일삼는 집단이 뚜렷이 구분되고 있으며, 일부 시민들은 “시위대가 도발에 넘어가지 말고 평화적으로 목소리를 내야 한다”고 호소했다.
