Citizens Pay Taxes But Only Suffer as Public Facilities Become Drug Havens
Los Angeles bus stops have degenerated into sanctuaries for drug addicts and the homeless. While city officials plan to add 280 new bus shelters this year alone, existing stops have already been transformed into homeless encampments.
One local resident expressed outrage, saying: “Bus stops are basically being hijacked by drug dealers and drug users, and it’s turned into like one of the biggest open-air drug markets.” Public facilities built with taxpayer money are now being misused as drug trading venues.
Public transit users suffer every morning on their commutes, forced to inhale drug fumes. One citizen reported, “Every morning it’s the same thing. You can see them doing it, then you smell it,” adding that she wears two masks for protection.
The LA City Council has approved a staggering $30 million budget for bus shelter replacements and additions, but there are serious doubts about whether this enormous tax expenditure will lead to meaningful solutions. Citizens continue paying high taxes while being denied their right to safely use public transportation.
According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, approximately 25% of homeless adults in LA County suffer from mental illness, and 14% have substance use disorders. However, effective treatment and rehabilitation programs remain insufficient.
A local activist criticized the situation: “It’s just unbelievable that we can’t get city officials to do their job. We cannot get the San Francisco Police Department to do their job to clean up our city, so our children and our family members are safe walking down the street.”
Citizens are experiencing daily stress, anxiety, and even depression, while their tax dollars are being spent on temporary fixes rather than addressing root causes. There is an urgent need for stronger, more effective measures to tackle the drug and homelessness crisis plaguing Los Angeles.
